Deliverable Products/Projects
Here are some deliverable projects a high school student can create to demonstrate their understanding of creative writing:
Short Story Collection: A series of short stories in various genres (e.g., fantasy, drama, mystery), demonstrating different narrative techniques, character development, and themes.
Personal Essay or Memoir: Write a reflective personal essay or memoir piece that explores a meaningful experience or moment in life, showcasing voice, emotion, and introspection.
Poetry Anthology: Compile a collection of original poems that explore different styles (e.g., free verse, sonnets, haikus) and themes, accompanied by explanations of the inspiration behind each piece.
Flash Fiction Portfolio: A series of flash fiction stories (each under 1,000 words) that explore concise storytelling, focusing on impactful imagery, language, and plot within a short space.
Creative Nonfiction Project: Write a piece of creative nonfiction, blending factual reporting with narrative techniques. This could include personal reflections or an exploration of a real-world topic through a narrative lens.
Script or Screenplay: Develop a script for a short film, play, or radio drama, focusing on dialogue, stage directions, and dramatic tension, accompanied by a written analysis of the characters and themes.
Literary Magazine or Zine: Create a digital or physical literary magazine/zine that features their own writing alongside the work of peers, including poetry, stories, essays, and visual art.
Writing Blog or Website: Set up a blog or website where they regularly post creative writing pieces, share thoughts on the writing process, and engage with readers through comments or feedback.
Collaborative Storytelling Project: Work with classmates or friends to develop a group storytelling project, where each person writes a different chapter or section, creating a collaborative narrative that demonstrates different voices and styles.
Character Sketches: Develop detailed character profiles for a potential novel or short story, including backstory, personality traits, and potential story arcs. This can be presented alongside sample scenes that explore the character's development.
Writing Workshop: Organize a peer-led creative writing workshop, where students share and critique each other's work, using constructive feedback to refine and improve their writing.
Multimedia Storytelling: Combine creative writing with other media (e.g., photography, music, or visual art) to tell a story in a unique format, blending narrative with other artistic expressions.
Fan Fiction: Write a fan fiction piece based on a favorite book, movie, or TV series, demonstrating an understanding of character, plot, and setting while adding their own creative twist.
Genre Writing Experiment: Create a collection of pieces that experiment with different genres, such as horror, romance, sci-fi, or historical fiction, exploring the unique conventions and expectations of each genre.
These projects allow students to explore different forms and techniques of creative writing while showcasing their unique voice and storytelling skills
